Question: Is DTG Printing ready for a small Clothing Line?

As a clothing line, I need the ability to print samples of new designs, and print small to medium runs on demand. I'm only printing for my own line and no outside work is planned.

So...is a machine like the HM1 viable, or do I have to wait for and cough up $50K for the Kornit Breeze, or Brother 782 to get the quality, ease of use, reliability, consistency, for a $2-$3 cost per print + the $50 per day lease payment?

I've got samples from the 2 Long Beach 2009 shows and I think the Brother 782 (Tiger on Navy) and the Kornit (Dragon) are beautiful and have washed well.

I'm trying to compare current and near future DTG to Silkscreening with an outside printer at $2 per print with minimums and screen charges, to getting a used silkscreen press and all of the mess.

Thank You.

I haven't seen this problem before and all of the usual parts swaps are not working on this. So I'm hoping somebody here with more experience then I can shed some light on the matter.

Have an Espon 4800 based DTG machine in which the cyan nozzle constantly drips/oozes ink and clogs (see attached picture).

I imagined it was due to air getting in the line before the cartridge/head which was causing the problem. With that in mind I have so far:

New O-Rings for both sides of the Elbow at the Print Head
New Elbow to the Print Head
New Damper (twice)
New Ink Cartridge

All fittings are snug, humidity, etc - is all at optimum levels (other printers running in the same room do not have this problem)

I am able to pull a vacuum on the line with the levers up - but the cyan ink always seems to continually ooze out and clog the head withing 10-15 minutes of cleaning/wiping the existing ooze off the head. (Prints Cyan just fine when the head isn't covered in garbage).

None of the other channels do this - and this printer originally didn't demonstrate this issue.

If anyone here has seen this or has any other ideas on what else to swap/look into - let me know!

The Wagner Control Spray Sprayer is the main electric sprayer used to apply pretreatment. My service and support techs have noticed quite a few users of the Wagner Control Spray are not maintaining their sprayers properly. This will lead to pretreatment problems.

As much as I would everyone to buy our SpeedTreater Automatic Pretreater, I realize that most will continue to use the Wagner sprayer to hand spray. Maintaining the Wagner is not difficult and should be part of your regular schedule. Once a week empty out the pretreatment you have in the gun. Fill the container with hot water and spray the gun into a bucket or a sink for about 3 minutes. This helps flush out the entire spray mechanism which will help keep it running well. Then just empty the water out and refill it back up with pretreatment.

One item users tend to ignore are the filters in the back of the sprayer power unit. Over time they do get dirty. If the air flow into the sprayer gets impeded the gun will not spray properly. The filters are inexpensive and very easy to change out. Just unscrew the two screws in the back, take off the cover, and the filters are right there (see picture below).

Proper pretreating is crucial to getting white ink to print well. Keeping your sprayer in top form will help in applying the correct lay down.
