Latest thing I have seen is sequin embroidery.
At PPAI Expo in Las Vegas there were some exhibitors showing company logos embroidered in sequins.

Little round shiny things that you sew on to make things sparkle.

I have the cording attchment I bought almost two years ago but have never used at all. The sequin attchment is cool but I'm afraid to buy it because I might end up not using them, just like the cording attchment. There's also this laser attchment from HIRSCH, but this would be too expensive, I guess. And then Chenille Embroidery might be making a comeback also.

Here's an article from screenweb.com by Harry Bernstein of Hirsch on some add-on decorating techniques:

This isn't that new but one of the vendors at the AC ISS show was doing multi-media designs incorporating screen printing and embroidery. This is a good way to cut down on the stitch count/ design weight to create full-sized designs for thinner fabrics. Different distressed looks also seem popular.

You are so correct about multi-media. I saw a lot of that at PPAI Expo in Las Vegas. There are some very creative things you can do combining screen printing and embroidery.
