What are the options for backings for embroidered patches?
This forum is great! I too have been struggling through making custom patches. My roadblock has been on finding a proper backing/technique to apply to the patch after it has been embroidered-to cover the stitches and firm up the patch. The patches I'm making will generally be sewn on later by the customer. Could someone steer me in the direction as to finding a supplier and what backings are best to give it a professional finish? I've been to the local fabric store and the product they carry is very thin and not the look I'm trying to find. I also understand that I will probably need a heat press to do these properly. Thank you for any help!!

You can use any fusible interfacing as backing which can be purchased at your local fabric store. Fusible interfacing comes in different varieties of thickness. They probably showed you Wonder Under on your previous visit to the fabric store. Wonder Under is popular. But, if you go back and tell them you want a thick fusible interfacing, they will be able to help you.
Re: What are the options for backings for embroidered patches?
Thanks, however I already have blank patches that I can embroider on. What I'm specifically looking for is what options are available to put on the back of the patch after I have embroidered it. I've seen other forums about this and there has been reference made to a plastic film or a heat seal that is put on the back of the patch. My difficulty has been in finding these from suppliers. The fabric stores only carry a thin iron on adhesive and cannot order anything else. I need something to firm up the patch afterwards and give it a professional look. I've heard of everything from a liquid glue that you can roll on to an adhesive film, but that is where my research has ended. Can anyone give me more detailed information on these products and the pros and cons of different products?
thanks,
Nettie
We also use a light weight vinyl to make patches that will be sewn on for our motorcycle club and to sell at rallys. No worry about raveled edges and the customers love them! We also do the sewing on the jackets and vests with an OLD Singer cast iron sewing machine.
