Morning All, I need help. I want to start digitizing embroidery and need to end up with a DST file. What software is best for that and can I digitize direct from a JPG????
I'm new to this area so I can not speak which is the best software to use; however, I own embroidery Magic 2 and have found tutorials on the net, e.g. Embroidery Software Digitizing Video. Sounds like any digitizing software can produce DST format using JPG. The link above is a demonstration using a JPG as input.
Hope that helps.

Re: Help needed
The best software is Wilcom and the top version is about $15,000. Yes you can go from a jpg to a dst and no you cannot do it automated and have it look good or sew out good, it takes some work to get it there.
I use dg/ml pulse and like it well enough, expensive though. I would quickly sketch something in photoshop and save it as a jpeg then import it. I would then digitize going by the jpeg, thus creating the dst.
I already use Adobe Illustrator to make vector images, so is it easier to digitize from EPS to DST than JPG??? So many questions!!!!!!!!I am getting there tho thanks to you lot in here. Cheers

I think so. I usually print a full color image of what I will be working on, then I remove all the fills and give everything a .01 black stroke. Then I import that .eps into Wilcom and use it as a guide. It makes for nice clean lines to work from.
Wilcom is the way to go, but it is a little costly. ..... JB

Like binki said, it's not at all plug and play. Just because you have embroidery software with the capability for digitizing, doesn't mean that you'll be able to digitize with it once you have it. It takes a lot of learning, skill, and trial and error to get good enough to produce a final product worthy of giving to a customer. There are lots of companies out there that will accept your design and digitize it for you for a fee. If you only have one design, you're talking about $20 or more to have someone digitize it vs $thousands to buy the software and months to learn.

[Thank you one and all for the advice. As I already use Adobe to vector images I dont mind learning a new software. Now I just have to find a reasonable priced version.
