Default Selling garment with free embroidery

Hi:
I have company here that started selling garments and giving free embroidery. What they are doing is you buy 12 garments at retail and then they will embroider them for free. My customer that told me about this has a bid for a jacket that is about a 100% markup from my cost. He has to buy 12 jackets they can be different style jackets but all will get the same embroidery on them they are doing the embroidery left chest. My question is has anyone done this and if so how well did it work for you.

We normally price all of our work as a single price per piece but all of our costs are figured in. If the customer knows the retail on the garment then we 'add' an embroidery fee by piece. I guess you could call the first method free embroidery but it really isn't.

It sounds like a good marketing. I would think you could tweak their idea lower your price a little and scoop up the sales. ...JB

I should have add the 100% markup is just on the jacket not the embroidery cost.

I price my items to include "standard embroidered personalization" (i.e. name, and maybe small stock design). I do not, and would not however, call it "free" embroidery. I just tell my customers "the prices you see include embroidery". I think that the minute you tell them embroidery is "free", you are lowering the value of your skill and service to the customer.

I was thinking about doing something like that as well. But just make sure you specify Left chest embroidery up to a certain stitch count so you dont get a 50,000 stitch jacket back order. Customers always like to hear free, even if they really are still paying for it and in some cases paying more.

You're so right about being specific...I write those specifics on the price tag..."includes name or monogram". If it includes a stock graphic, those choices have to be clearly displayed as well.
