Hello, i recently visited the local embroiderer, and he told me he charges a $90 "one time setup" fee.
I assume this is to digitize my image. I was wondering of many other places charge this, and if they do I was wondering if they charged that much money.
Another place I visited, the guy drew the digital embroidery image by himself on his program. He just told me to bring in a picture and he would draw and print it.
Can someone tell me more about these two different methods?

It's very common for embroidery companies to charge for digitizing your logo/art if it is custom (not just a stock font). As for how expensive it is, depends on how complicated the art is and approx. how many stitches it'd be.
Both "methods" mentioned above, sound like the same methods to me. Digitizing isn't just putting it in a program, it's also figuring out how to direct stitching to provide best quality embroidery. There are also service websites you can find, to digitize your image for you (just make sure you figure out if your local embroider actually accepts already digitized files and that its compatible with their machines).
One embroiderers draws the digital image from a printout of the image. I was wondering is the final product pretty dependent on the embroiderer's skill as an artist on the program?
I just recently had these two designs done . . it cost me $50.00 each for design . . after the digitizing cost, . . I provide the shirts, hoodies, etc, they only charge me $4.50 per shirt . . though the stitch out showed it should cost over $11.00
since I paid for the digitizing, I had the company signed an agreement that 'my' designs could not be use by another person/company without my permission and without paying a usage fee
then, I made sure I had a copy of the file on disk, so that I am able to take it to any embroidery company
$90.00 seems a bit high . . however, the cost might be due to digitizing, thread type, thread color change, size of the design, stitch count, etc . .
hope that gives you some idea
Diane

Actually, both. The final outcome would depend on how well the design was digitized, but it is also possible to obtain a less desirable result if the design was stitched using a machine that is not "tuned up" properly, or an older machine.

Draw and print, not embroider? Maybe he will just an "embroidery effect" available in CorelDraw.
