Default why isn't the thread catching?

Hi again-
Some materials just do not seem to lend themselves to certain colors. I can stitch a practice piece (simple 100% cotton) and it embroiders beautiful. Then try the same design on another fabric (usually poly/nylon, hats, etc. are the worst), and half or more of the stitches are not catching the hook. I've tried to think this through as logically as I could, but I can't get anywhere (after literally HOURS of playing with it). Is there something I'm missing? I can remove the material, take off the needle plate, rotate the wheel by hand, and it catches 99% of the time. Put the material back on, turn it by hand, and it skips half/most of the time. I can't even think how this can be happening.

Also, a side question: I've noticed before I have better "catching" success when doing nylon/poly coats and the like when I decrease the check spring tension (to almost no load). I've searched and searched but I can't find anywhere that this is supposed to make any difference. What effect (or rather, how much) does this have on embroidering? The check spring that is.

Thanks for any help, the first problem is [almost] driving me nuts!!

When doing a test sew use the material you will be using for the final sew-out. Also check your rotary hook timing. Go the the support section on the type of machine you are using and look up troubleshooting, see if the information is there, if not call your machine support.

Have you run an H or FOX test and set the thread tension for each needle based on the results? Have you correctly set your bobbin tension?

Default Re: why isn't the thread catching?

Per the rotary hook timing -- I've timed the hook the best I could, but I have a question: Is the tip of the hook supposed to be in the very middle of the needle's scarf? If that's the case I have to lower every needle about 3mm from it's stop point. I've already lowered the most used needles, as that's where they work best.

I haven't run a FOX test yet though I know I should. A recent job had a satin stitch that revealed a very close 1/3 1/3 1/3 on the bottom. The bobbin thread in the drop test drops about halfway down.

From what I've seen I'm suspecting either needle depth/rotation or still improper hook timing, but it may very well be something else. I can't imagine that the needles have to be set to the [almost] micromillisecond, but perhaps they do. I've searched and researched, but I can't find anything even on the manufacturer's site. So may have to call support...

I appreciate the suggestions, and will continue to try to nail this baby down.
