By law what requirements do you need for your e-commerce site. Or are these just good practices?

Good question. And who is responsible for that when your not the one creating the website?

I don't know of any law that lists what is required for a web site.

Best practices would be things like: complete contact information, privacy policy, return policy, a secure checkout, proper labeling and description of products, clearly defined and displayed prices.

Obviously, any practices that would be considered fraudulent would be against the law.

As to who is responsible, my guess (and I'm not a lawyer) would be that the person that owns the domain is responsible for what happens on the web site. If you're paying someone else to do the work, it would be assumed they are doing it under your direction and that, as the owner, you have responsibility for what happens on your site.

In the US there is no law that says what you have to have on your web site, unless you sale to those under 13 years of age.

In you live in a country that is in the European Union there are regulations on how you display the price and vat tax.

If you take credit card information over the internet then the credit card companies have requirements for that. But they are not laws.

Tom I beg to differ with you here
Fist let me say there are alot of hackers/crackers out there that fileshare cracked or stolen software templates etc. rapidshare.com is one of the worst out there
You get caught with a stolen template on your site the law suits will come.

Second and probally more important is the GPN license that comes with anything you use. I mainly design in Joomla and there are 100's of very useful Mods, Coms and Plugins out. I always make sure to verify the license for commercial use, and have found in MOST cases a quick contact email to the writer and he/she lets you use it. All I am saying here is double check the license before going live.

Sorry I though we were discussing content requirements, like having a privacy policy, how prices are displayed , ect.

Not the use of illegal use of code, application or commercial templates, or licenses miss use. ect..
In that case simple don't do it.

Some content items:
1. About Us:
The more sophisticated shoppers will want to know something about you. But be careful
what you write, and avoid negative things. like "we started business a month ago"

2. Contact Us:
Do not use your personal email in this information. Other then Free hosting site, you will get a few email accounts.
Use one of these, Like [email address]. Most shopping carts have something for this.

3. Privacy Policy:
People want to know what you do with there data they give your when they order products. Be honest
but never sale your customers data. The exception to no laws in the US is the State of California if
your site is ever compromised.
These will apply if you sale any items to a person who lives there.

If you can include information on cookie usage.
Will any ones else get my data? For a small site the best policy is don't sale information.

4. Conditions of Site Use:

Most small sites usually do not have this. But as you grow larger and have some trouble some customers show up.
When you will need to tell them in advance what will get them banned and other things like that.
You can look at other site that have a condition of use policy. But never copy it word for word.
How do you safe gaurd my information.

5 Shipping policy:
This contains information how shipping of your products.
Who do you use to ship you products?
Is there a maximum size they will ship? (Generally only for freight)
How long to ship?
Usually this is just a link to the shippers time estimator.
Will you have tracking numbers?
How many business days from order to shipping?

Monday through Friday is considered a Business day.

Since this site is about Imprintable you can also add care and cleaning of of the products.
Size charts :
Measuring how to :
Standard Color Charts:

None of these are required, but help with the customers perception of you and your site.

There is one law that keeps causing problem in the Court, COPA, it basically is a Federal law that governs the sale of anything to minors over the Internet. I can't really tell you if it's even a current law, or the court system has thrown it out.

Now if you plan on saleing internationally that's a different story.

On March 22, 2007, U.S. District Judge Lowell A. Reed, Jr. once again struck down the Child Online Protection Act,[7] finding the law facially in violation of the First and Fifth Amendments of the United States Constitution. In addition to the plaintiffs ACLU et al., several witnesses testified in defense of first amendment rights on the Internet, including the director of the Erotic Authors Association, Marilyn Jaye Lewis. [8] Reed issued an order permanently enjoining the government from enforcing COPA, commenting that "perhaps we do the minors of this country harm if First Amendment protections, which they will with age inherit fully, are chipped away in the name of their protection."[9] The government again appealed, and the case was heard before the Third Circuit.[10]
On July 22, 2008, the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the 2007 decision. [11][12]
On January 21, 2009, the United States Supreme Court refused to hear appeals of the lower court decision, effectively killing the bill.

At least as per Child Online Protection Act - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

That's good advice. There aren't any real requirements- it is up to you. Just look around at other sites and see what you think would work well for your site.

No. You haven't stated this clearly enough to mean anything (considered fraudulent by who?), but something fraudulent is not necessarily against the law. I can lie to you or pass along fraudulent information without breaking any laws.
