Default need help with keywords

I have had my website for a little over a year now, I designed it myself using illustrator and a $50 website program I bought at target.

I think I made a big mistake as after a year I was on page 6 on google when searching for my state, screen printing, and page one for my town, screenprinting and I decided I wanted to be a more "national" company and figured that would mean removing all my local ties on my website. Well, as you can imagine, I dissapeared from the search engines. I have since added local keywords back to the site but still dont seem to place on the search engines at all.

my question: is there a "best" way to use keywords? a best place to have them on your site?

I know there is no secret way to page one in google search and thats not what I'm looking for (unless you know a secret)
but I would just like to get back on the right track.

I currently have some keywords in my footer on most of the pages.

thanks for any and all help, the link to my site is in my signature if you want to review.

so im really far from being an expert on the whole thing, but from what i've learned from others that know what they are doing, a huge part of it is also how many times certain key words are used within your site, making it more relative to peoples search engine searches. Another big problem is having a flash website (not sure if you have one or not) but that does limit a lot of hits due to the fact that the keywords arent searched like they would be on a regular site.

Use Google Webmaster Tools, it will help you sort out the problem. i.e. you have no backward links, google link:nsignia screen printing for instance.
Google also makes mistakes, expect a lag of about three months or so before a change gets fully recognised.
If you disappear it's probably because you're doing something google doesn't like! (i.e. cloaking, paid links, automated google searches)
