Would it be a dumb idea to start a website with one design?
OKay i silk screened about 4 good designs...i really really like only one..so i wanna sell that one..do you think its a dumb idea to start a website with one design? I just want to start branding and getting my name out there..but i dont know if i should wait to give my consumers more of an option...can someone help me?
Re: Would it be a dumb idea to start a website with one design?
Just do it. I have learned so much since I started and if I went balls out in the beginning I would probably not be here today. I've made tons of mistakes but I've learned from them all.
Re: Would it be a dumb idea to start a website with one design?
Yes, start, as long as you do have more designs ready by the time you are getting noticed, because with one single design, you will seem like too small of a business to consider doing business with. That's just what I think when I go to a site with not enough content. As a consumer, if I see you only have one design, I will wonder what you are doing. It would be odd to me.
I think you got good advice, but the key in all of the advice is to work on "more" designs by the time you get real traffic, and have them ready.
This was really a two part question. The answer to go for it had more to do with getting you site development underway, than just answering the Q on one design.
One design on a site is not a good idea, if that is all you have when your traffic starts, considering putting up the other 3 *if you don't have others ready at the time* to fill in the page. As you create more designs that you like better, swap out the ones you do not prefer. Also, remember, there are plenty of posts on here by artists that are surprised that the design they liked the best did not sell as well as the one they thought was a bomb. There is no way of knowing, for sure, which is a seller. As for number of designs, 4 is okay, I think 6 is a better target, but that may be more of a personal preferrence, I am sure. Some will say 12, 18, etc.
I hope this helps. I understand where the other answers are coming from. Website development takes time, so start that, but try to target designs you like to also be ready in time for the action. Good luck to you. =)

I think it's safe to say, even in the clothing industry that you've got to:
"Sell the sizzle, and not the steak"
If you've got one kick butt design, it's going to have to be sold with a story. A great read if you've got time is a book that hits hard on that called Purple Cow
It's a great read and will give you insights on how to make your business successful regardless of how small or new you are by way of selling the sizzle through great story telling to draw your customer in. I'd say if you've got one design, find a killer way to market it, and go for it!
Re: Would it be a dumb idea to start a website with one design?
It's not a good idea, but it's not a dumb one either.
You run the risk of people bouncing off your site and not coming back.
But if it's the right design and the right site, there's no reason not to start that way. I've seen some good concept tee stores that started with one good idea. Generally the ones that worked best had a simple site that really focused on the quality of their one product. If the product is good enough it just leaves customers interested in buying it and/or wondering what will come next.
On the other hand one poor product and/or poor website won't do any good, and if you're unlucky people will remember it when you are expanding.
So the key is quality - always true anyway, but even more important with a lone product.
Re: Would it be a dumb idea to start a website with one design?
My simple answer: YES, you can make a website whenever you want to, even if you have ZERO designs. I wouldn't promote the website very heavily though, because if people come to your website and see one design, they would be very deterred. If I went to a website with only 1 t-shirt design, I would probably leave immediately, thinking something is very wrong, unless it was the coolest design I've ever seen. That being said, don't spend TOO much time working on your website, because you could be doing something more productive - like designing t-shirts!
It'd be a good idea to split your time between the website design and t-shirt design so you don't get burnt out on one or the other.
