Default Need help getting pics to load faster

Some of the pics on my website is loading really slow. I called Godaddy and they told me that I need to reduce the megapixals on my pics. Is this what I need to do? If so, how do I do this? I use windows photo gallery to store my pics. Is there a way I can do this without having to take more pics? Any advice would be very appreciated.
My wesite is pinkneckunlimitedcom
Thanks,
Shanne

Get photoshop/psp or GIMP, go to image size/resample and reduce your resolution from your current setting to about 72/96dpi. Reducing from 200dpi to 100dpi cuts the file size by 3/4!

You can go online for an image for the web optimizer. The good ones will allow different format saving options as well as color reduction etc. I am in the same boat as I have tons of pics and they all need to be optimized. Actually the whole website is going under reconstruction in the new year.

If you have LOTS of images, a reformatter is a better idea.. OR if have photoshop, you can create an ACTION that automatically resizes the image, then you just open all of the images you need to resize and click the action and it will do it for you.. I wrote a tutorial on how to do that somewhere.. if you have photoshop, let me know, i will find it and post it

Thanks for all the help everyone. I don't have photoshop yet, but a buddy of mine will be giving me a copy soon. I used Irfan View and it worked great this time. My pics are now loading faster.

Here is a link for an optimiser. Many programs as mentioned have them built in.

Online Image Optimizer: Optimize your GIFS, JPGS, and PNGS online.

here you guy.. you might want to save this for when you DO get photoshop:

Quote:
know that there are a bunch of autothumbnailers out there that help a lot of people out with getting small images quickly. The thing is, you dont have any real control of them, and you can loose quality.

If you have photoshop, you can essentially do the same thing, but with a good quality image.
Heres how you do it:

FIRST set up a file on your computer where you want to save all your thumbnails

We need to set up an ACTION that remembers exactly what you do, and then perform that action when you tell it to.

So when you open photoshop, you will see a tab at the top called ACTIONS - click that
There will likely be some folders there already - if not its ok.
Create a folder for your action by clicking the little menu arrow and choosing NEW SET
a box will open where you can create a name for it. Call it RESIZE WEB and click ok
Then highlight the folder that you just created and click the arrow at the top and choose NEW ACTION
in the window that pops up, name the set VERTICAL THUMBNAIL - here you can also give it a shortcut key like f10 (just make sure its not already being used in photoshop
click RECORD - by clicking record you are recording everything you do to this action. You will see a round red button on now. If you want to stop recording, hit the square for stop.
So while you are recording, go to IMAGES -->IMAGE SIZE
When in the image size window, choose your thumbnail sizes - i use 240p/i resolution, and then make the longest side (when doing verticle that is height) to 240 as well.
click OK
Then go to FILE --> SAVE FOR WEB
Choose .jpg as file type, choose quality (i choose 80 because it cuts filesize without really loosing any quality)
Click SAVE and choose the folder that you created at the begining
You will now end up back at the screen with your image in it
Go back to the actions tab and click the STOP button (the square)
Chose the pictures that you had opened choose DONT SAVE (because you already did)

There you go.. now you created an automatic way to create thumbnails.. GO ahead and open as many images as you want - then click actions, choose your verticle thumbnail and just hit PLAY, the triangle button. This will automatically resize your image and save it to the same folder that you saved it to last time..

The ONLY issue that i have found with this is that you have to make sure to have different names for your large and small images because they reside in the same folder.. THAT, or your can tell oscommerce to choose the thumbnails from one folder and the large images for the other.. then they can be the same name

Try it.. Let me know how you like it!!! works great for me!!!

To do a bunch of images using lindsayanng's process about, simply go to File>Automate>Batch and select the Action you just created using the instructions given, it will do multiples files without having to manually load each one.

... you should be able to re-sample your images in your HTML editor too, such as Dreamweaver.

oh yea.. i forgot about that! the batch thing. You should also get a bunch of file renamers. This way you can save your new thumbnails into a different folder isntead of renaming them as you go but also not replacing the originals.. then, you use a file renamer to do a mass naming of all of your files.. i LOVE those programs
here are just a few

File Renamer Basic - Free software downloads and reviews - CNET Download.com

Always use 72dpi for web.
If you do save for web it will automatically do this for you.
