Default Question about advertising on your site and pricing

We are considering allowing 1 advertiser post a banner on the bottom of our site but are unsure about a few things.

1) We would rather people didn't leave our site for another, but it would only be on banner ad on the front page, not a lot of them.

2) what to charge. We get 10,000+ uniques a month, sometimes more.

What are your thoughts?

No,...No...and No...

You say you rather not have people leave for another website, and that its only on the front page. lol THE FRONT PAGE!??! That's the first thing people will see.....

Advertising other business's on your website only really works if you are a service provider. I see that you sell retail t-shirts, and I know a lot, A LOT of people would be turned off by that.

Ad Banners are great for forums, blogs, etc, but never retail. My 2 cents.

I 100% agree with that.

If you are selling ads on a site where you are trying to promote your product, it seems to tell customers that you don't value their business or that you don't have confidence in your own business model or products.

If your site is informational, that's a different story. But on a site where you are trying to sell your products, you don't want a customer leaving through a banner instead of checking out your site and products.

It depends on the advertising. Is it another t-shirt site? or is it a complimentary site to yours. While I also think that in general ads on a ebiz site are bad, certain ads may be ok.

I would also like to agree with everyone else is saying but I've been asked the same question about putting a banner on my page. So I created a separate pages called "sponsors" or "Links"....its works out pretty well without putting banners on your home page or retail pages. Does anyone else agree? I could be wrong.....

If the links are complimentary, and not competition, then I agree with a "links' "Friends" "Sponsors" page of links.

I will not ever advertise for a competitor on my own retail site. And I wouldn't expect my competitor to advertise for me on his site. It's kind of counterproductive in my opinion. Plus, if I go to a retail site, I don't expect to be bombarded with ads, just the products that I've come looking for.

I have a links/friends page with all sorts of links. If it is a competitors site, I get commission for sales they generate from traffic from my site
