Exclamation Slow Loading Sites are NOT good. Are they Dangerous also?

slow sites turns me off, waiting a long time for pages to come up on the screen sucks, even with high speed.

why is that? why do some sites take for ever to load your conputer?

so far, I know when sites try do add and run programs off- your computer it slows things down a lot.

for example:

" ActiveX controls ..... In some cases, these programs can be used to collect information from your computer in ways you might not approve of, possibly damage information on your computer, install software on your computer without your consent, or allow someone else to control your computer remotely. Given these risks, you should only install ActiveX controls or add-ons if you completely trust the publisher and the website offering it. "

So, you hear about a site, go there and visit but it asks you to intall stuff on your computer. Why would you trust a site like this? I mean, sure this site can have some sponsors, varified safety stuff...but still, does that ensure TRUST and SAFETY? ...I don't think so.

What is there to gain by installing Add-on programs in peoples computers?

It's because the latest technology in web design is not bandwidth friendly. People who design websites usually have broadband so they tend to forget that lots of people are still on dial-up. I have fiberoptic broadband and I still run into slow loading sites. Those sites would be unreadable by someone on dial-up. When you design a site, it needs to be designed for the lowest common denominator, which is dial-up. I find it amusing that someone will be so proud of their new website and not realize that more than 50% of their visitors won't even get past the welcome screen.

I wouldn't assume that because a website is slow, it is installing spyware on your computer. If it asks you to install something and you say yes, well, consider that a lesson learned. If a website requires that I install some sort of activeX control to view their site, then I don't think I need to see their site.

50%? 2.57% of the visitors to my site have dial-up. Admittedly, 19.19% are unknown, but Cable, DSL, and T1 combined are just over 77.37%. So while I will agree that it's important to design for slower connection speeds, I wouldn't exaggerate the importance of dial-up users. On my site, dial-up users access on average the same number of pages as cable or DSL users, and almost as many pages on my image-heavy blog. So I would say that dial-up users have a certain degree of patience that other users might not. Sorry this isn't germane to your original post, Lucy.

Beautiful sites should rarely tax bandwidth, unless they are specifically video-oriented sites.

The majority of surfers webwide definitely are still on dial-up or slow connections, though this does vary from site to site, as Joe noted. So you should definitely aim to target the slowest users in your design. I will admit some of my favorite sites have alot of Active X, Flash movies, and the like, but when it comes to ecommerce, it is a safe bet to stay away.
