This is not strictly speaking a T-shirt related query, but I thought some kind soul might be able to help me out.
How do you make your blog post Categories appear in the sidebar?
I don't like the way all my posts are listed one under the other down the sidebar - I'd rather they were in categories. Or at least, somehow tidier than they are
now. Ditto, the recent Comments.
eg: On my home page down the bottom of the sidebar, only the categories with
external links are listed. The categories I have assigned to my own posts are
not listed, even though I have created them. How do I get these to appear in the sidebar?
Guess I need to put my blog up, but I know we are not supposed to include links in posts on this forum. So...if you think you can help, please google for my blog, which is called The Boomtown Rap (not the Bombay Times column of the same name, which I hasten to add I didn't know about when I named my blog!).
Also, how do you get only the first few lines of each post to appear, rather
than the whole post, so a reader can elect to click on the post if they want
to see it all?
OK, this post is not T-shirt-related at all - except that I am planning a blog linked to my T-shirt site (when that's ready)...then it will be!
Which all amounts to a BUMP. Guilty.
I now know how to truncate blog posts, so don't any longer need an answer to my final para. This Categories not showing dilemma has me stumped, though, and I can't get any joy from Codex or the WP Support Forum. So, if anyone can help with some simple troubleshooting/instructions, would be muchos obliged.
To your sidebar template where you want the categories to show up.
Keep in mind that the default setting is that the the categories don't actually show up on your blog until you have something (a post) that actually goes in that category.
You have to actually change one of the attributes (arguments) in the category code above to make it show categories with no posts:
Quote:
hide_empty (boolean) Toggles the display of categories with no posts. The default is true (hide empty categories). Valid values:
Thanks, Rodney. I have saved your advice for future reference.
I eventually managed to do what I was after using a plugin, but it's good to have the actual code for that happy time in The Future when I will actually understand it enough to appreciate it!
I've got the first WP help book on order, so that will hopefully fill some of the basic gaps that have limited my understanding of much of the Codex info. Some time, it would be nice to modify my blog's appearance so it looks just a little more polished! Silly, really - I put so much effort into my writing, then present the blog in such a rudimentary fashion.
Anyway, thanks again for your effort in addressing my query.
