Default how to etch onto a shirt

hi guys, im newer than new, so be gentle and forgiving!
this may well be the wrong section to ask this, but here goes anyway.
i heard a long time ago that there is a chemical that you can use to make a photocopied image just burn/etch/stain directly onto the shirt, so you can lift the paper off and the image is left on. can anyone confirm this? and point me in the right direction?
i have black and white images i want to put on dark shirts, but my local poster store says it cant be done (apart from screen printing), and that the only option is making a shiny transfer, which looks very poor.
can anyone help me make some cool t-shirts?!
thanks, mark.

Not sure if this is what you're looking for or not, but you are describing (sort of) heat transfers. You need special paper, special ink for a printer, and a heat press. You make a digital copy of the image, print it on the paper, and press it onto the shirt. They make special paper for dark colored shirts. Several of the vendors listed to the left of this message have that kind of paper.

thanks for jumping to my aid, but im looking for an alternative to sticking on something. i was hunting for some way of making an image thats on normal thin paper get onto the shirt by using a chemical to pour over the paper which makes it wet, then deposit the image off the paper onto the shirt.
does this sound familiar at all?
im SURE ive heard of this somewhere!

I've never heard of it. Why don't you just use a magic marker or something?

Never heard of the method you are describing either.
Dye sublimation has no feel to the image as the image gets dyed into the fabric and you can reproduce full color photos and designs, but this method is not suitable for natural fabric or ready-made dark synthetic garments.

You may want to look into DTG printing and screen printing with discharge or water-based inks - these methods are suitable for dark natural fabrics and don't have a heavy hand you are trying to avoid.

There is such a thing as photo transfer liquid that might be what you're looking for.

Google "Omni-gel" or "Picture This Transfer Medium Plaid."
