Same printer yes, same ink no. Sublimation uses a dye sub ink. Transfers typically use a pigment ink. Each time you want to change ink you will have to completely clean out the print heads and this is a big waste of ink so I would not recommend it because sublimation ink is very costly.
you can pick up a epson c88+ from Epson for around $50 with free shipping and use it for only your sublimation jobs and keep whatever printer you have now for your transfers.
Re: sublimation AND transfers with same printer and ink???
Hi Katrina,
Thanks for the quick respons.
For the sublimations I will use artainium ink, I suppose it's a good one.
But do you mean that I can use regular ink for the transfers?

Sublimation transfers and inkjet transfers are two different things.
Sublimation uses Dye Sub (artanium is good), and inkjet uses pigment. (Yes regular pigment ink)
Re: sublimation AND transfers with same printer and ink???
If you are just starting..I would try sublijet...also from Sawgrass, but the ICC profile ships with the inks and much much easier to use. I have used both and prefer sublijet...just my opinion...worth nothing else
Re: sublimation AND transfers with same printer and ink???
As stated above, you can't use the same ink for both. Several companies sell a hybrid setup based on the Epson 4880 printer that has several sublimation ink cartridges and several chroma-blast cartridges for transfers onto cotton. Expensive but it allows you to do both with 1 printer...

Yes, I use Sublijet ink and transfer papers (I-trans light & I-trans Dark from Laser Reproductions) made for sub ink. If you use a poly/cotton (50/50) T-shirt it holds the transfer longer. I have made these for 3 years and have only had 1 come back with a problem. You CANNOT leave the shirt wet with stain remover over the transfer area, the ink will blotch the entire shirt. I hand out washing instructions with each shirt that says "Machine wash with like colors, spot treat stains immediately before washing. Do NOT leave wet. Tumble dry, low heat."

Well, you can, if you are using sublimation ink in your printer - to use with both dye sub paper and inkjet heat transfer paper, but it's a heck of a waste of money, since using dye sub ink with inkjet heat transfer papers is an expensive ink choice.
I know of someone who has done this. Used dye sub ink with JPSS, and they actually preferred it to pigment. There are some posts, possibly with pictures posted, on this topic. You just have to search them out if you want to see them. I think "JPSS dye sub" might work for search terms.
PS: They did it as an experiment to see if it could be done, not as a permanent printing choice, due to ink cost and no gain otherwise. The polymer transfers, why pay the price of dye sub ink and still get a window, right?
And... with how much cheaper pigment ink is, why would you want to do this? Just for an occasional thing? So occasional that it's not worth picking up a cheap Epson printer?
If you rarely do these prints, you could stick with Epson carts, but even then, the refill carts with 3rd party ink can be the same price as a full set of Epson carts. So really, getting the right ink for inkjet heat transfer paper is actually pretty cheap.
Just wondering why you would want to go here?
Also, you can't go the other way around at all. No pigment ink with dye sub, I'm sure you realize this as you seem to have the dye sub set up already.
In addition, I can only remember someone doing this with JPSS (jetpro sofstretch) so if this is something you really want to pursue, you'd probably need to try a sample pack of paper to see if you get the same positive results the JPSS got.
Good luck to you.

Hi Kelly, Thanks for the big response
I haven't set up anything yet. I did order different samples with sublimationprints on it.
I like the sublimations, I think it's a good quality. Thats why I want to use it. However it only works on light coloured shirts.
Where I want to go: I also want to work with dark coloured shirts, thats why I am looking into the other transfers.
Is there any transferpaper on the market that has a breathable print?
Unfortunatelly I don't like Vapor shirts. I got some samples last week and I don't like how it fits on the body. It's not really a slim fit you know...
Thanks!

Hi there,
Maybe a stupid question, but do you need to cut the transferpapers before pressing them. I know that its not needed with sblimation.

Yes before pressing the transfer on the shirt you will need to trim the excess paper to prevent having the window (white box) around your design.
I use JPSS for my transfers. JPSS does not have a transfer paper for darks but there are several others great ones on the market.
Here is a video by a forum member here to see how it is done.

Not for inkjet heat transfers. You could order some sample packs of papers like JetWear for Darks and Ironall Dark (two of the most favorered on the forum from what I can tell) and try them to see for yourself, but they haven't made the advances that light inkjet heat transfer paper has made.
There are a few methods for darks. Some nice quality ones are plastisols or vinyl, dependings on what your designs are. DTG's are pricey, but if you find someone to outsource to, that works well, too. You can outsource screen printing (if you don't want to do it yourself) but with DTG, you can outsource lower quantities, which is a beauty if you don't have large inventory needs.
