Default Dye Sub on coloured blank surfaces

I am having good success printing on mugs and stubby holders (drink coolers) at the moment with my Epson R290 printer with dye sub CIS.

I would like to know if it is possible to use this setup to print on coloured blanks (ie - red/blue stubby holders instead of white surface)

At the moment when printing on the white surface stubby holders I am using a fair bit of ink to colour the background so thought if I could print on coloured surface that would cut down on ink usage.
