Hi all, just curious as to what do you mug makers do with "messed" up mugs. Do you get rid of them, give them to the client for free or just keep them lying around?
LOL So far I have an over stocked cupboard full of them. Been wondering the same thing. What to do. Thought about the good will store but, who would by a messed up mug. Some time soon am going to try some solvent on them to see if I can remove the coating.
I wouldn't give them to the client for free. I'd think you'd might only want to highlight your best work to the customer, not the *baddies*. =)
I would go with donating them and writing them off. There are many places that can use mugs. Possibly try to find out if you can donate them to soup kitchens, pregnancy care centers, places of that nature. Try to donate to the neediest cause you can find... everyone will feel good. Good luck to you.
Surely you would have to have the clients permission to donate messed up mugs if it is their logo, unless they are your own creation? I have considered printing black over the whole messed up image, so that I can give the mug away. I just have to give it a go to see if it will work though.

Good point. One that I have no seen raised before when it comes to donating unpaid for orders, or something like this.
Maybe a simple permission slip is all that is needed from the client to distribute the mugs with their logo. It will be free publicity for them, and donating to the needy is always good PR for anyone involved.
This is out of my range, and starting to sound like a question for legal consultation to me, to be sure everything is safe from that stand point.
I write off the mugs and toss them. Anything more is just added time and expense. I do save the defective mouse pads, coasters, license plates etc to test the platen height and pressure when I'm changing between products.
"messed up" as in the image didn't sublimate properly, either because of over heating in the press or the transfer paper had a slight air pocket thus leaving the image not fully x-ferred.
Yeah..I figured as much..if there is a custom logo that represents the clients business, I'd think permission to give them away is necessary. Although it would seem like a great PR for them, but I'd would rather get the permission.
Well, if 36 cups were ordered and 2 came out not up to snuff, I doubt the client would be upset in getting these 2 bag mugs along with the flawless 36. Its not like the mug is broken or anything, its a perfectly good mug.
Other option is to crack the mugs and recycle them.
Yeah, I was meaning good PR with the permission to do so. Otherwise, your idea of recycling them, giving them to them, or tossing and writing off. Good luck to you, hope you don't have too many of these to deal with in the future.
I give my messed up mugs to the client, they so appreciate that. I printed one mug upside down, and the client was ecstatic to have that messed up mug.
The other mugs that I do, with graphics etc; that I don't care for, I donate to the local rest home. The residents of these facilities use alot of mugs, as do their quests. It also makes a nice advertisement venture.
I use some of them at the store for free coffee for shoppers and employees as long as they are not real bad if they are real bad I toss them out. I also have one guy that buys them for $1 per mug and brakes them up into real small peaces and makes items with them and cement. Like fountains and other items.
Yeah, I hate it when I mess up a cup, but I guess that makes us human. As I said with the upside down up, it was a logo also, but the owner loves this cup more than the others, says that is how his days go sometimes, so it is just perfect. I wish I had a $1 for each cup I have had to throw away, just because I can't find any feasible use for it.
Great posts!!! Thanks for sharing. I'm going to put this one in my favs. You guys are awesome! I loved the one about the upside down logo being the fav... and the cement and the target practice. All good! Thanks again. =)
