Default Lowering Ink Costs

I need to get my ink costs down as our output has increased quite a bit but on fairly low margins. It is mostly hard substrate products we print such as mugs/aluminium/coasters etc as well as fabric mousemats. Currently doing about 5000+ mugs a month plus all the other stuff but still growing quickly. What are the best options to get our ink prices down and which printer is most suited for our setup? As we only print designs for the small items listed above is wide format the way to go to get the ink at the lowest cost?

Not totally sure this is relevant but.... I bought cheaper ink for printing on A4 colour transfers and regretted it. The cheaper stuff seemed to ok, until it was washed and the black ink turned green. Not sure if the same thing would happen with dye sub inks, but you never know!

I am not really talking about cheap ink but buying the good stuff cheaper..... if that make sense. Sawgrass push the price right up until you hit wide format 42" I think. Quite happy to buy by the litre but this only makes a difference when you get to the above printer sizes unfortunately. I would have been happy with wide format desktop but don't know if there is anyway of getting comparable pricing to the 42" wideformat. The difference in pricing is massive just I don't know the in's and out's and what is best suited to what I do. We can easily double output over the next 6 months and the ink bill is starting to give me sleepless nights. I'd be happy with the 4880 and the larger wide format ink but Sawgrass would kick my ***.

What printer and inks are you using? A lot also depends how what printer you use, how you print your images out ...what size paper you use.....how many images you print on a page, etc.
