Im thinking about getting the epson 4000 and was wondering if there is any difference to only using 4 slots (black, cyan, yellow, magenta) instead of all eight to print sublimation?? Im just trying to save money on ink at first.

You should get this Epson 4000 configured to run dual CYMK sublimation ink. Not only will you get great color with the 4 color set, but it will print MUCH faster in a dual cmyk setup.

Mike is right on this one. The 4000 was a great printer because you can change the firmware to run in Dual CMYK - something Epson prevented with the 4800 and on. At this point, I am not aware of any printing software (RIP or driver) that comes with the profiles to run the 4000 off of just 4 slots - not to mention the cost of the RIP would be the difference in putting the inks in the other side. You will need to talk to the distributor that you purchase the inks from for the instructions on how to change the firmware to run it in Dual CMYK.

Good luck with your new printer.

Ok I see. So when you say dual CMYK do you mean using 2 black, 2 cyan , 2 yellow, 2 mangenta instead of using 1 matte black, 1 cyan, 1 light cyan, 1 light black, 1light magenta, 1 magenta, 1 photo black, 1 yellow.

Yes...CMYK on the left side and CMYK on the right side.

Sorry to the OP for jumping in on the thread as well but I might be buying a 4000 tomorrow. With the advice already given for dual cmyk, where do you get the correct software from to run this on sublimation. Is dual cmyk the done thing for a 4000 sublimation setup? Which ink is best suited?
You will use the regular Epson 4000 driver. You just need to setup the firmware on the printer correctly to run it as Dual CMYK and then get a profile that you like. As I mentioned above, the distributor that you purchase the sublimation ink from should have both of these. Maybe even Mike has these.
Thanks for the reply Mark. I'm UK based and we have far less option over here where to buy from and who to trust. I do need to totally change my setup but have had a bad few weeks with problem after problem so am looking to do a temporary fix before Xmas, hence the 4000 option.
Yes...CMYK on the left side and CMYK on the right side.
Ok thanks. Im buying this printer used what do I need to do to set it up for sublimation?? I have read you need to flush out all the regular epson ink before installing your sublimation ink?
Thanks Sonya. I am working through my problems tomorrow so will know which way I need to go soon. I don't really want to jump into buying a printer I am not sure of but the 4000 might be a temporary solution is I can't get past my current problems.
