Why is it we can print on polyester mousepads
with any inkjet printer output but need sublimation ink output to print poyester shirts
and other sublimation substrates? If the mouse pads are covered with polyester, why don't we need to use output from sublimation?

Hi. I wasn't aware that you can print on polyester mousepads with ordinary inkjet ink?

Sublimation ink undergoes a chemical change when heat & pressure is applied and the ink migrates into the polyester coating, rather than just lie on the surface. Standard inkjet ink is not capable of that process.

You can use inkjet heat transfers to cover mousemats?

I have been using inkjet from the beginning, about 25 years on mouse pads. I always
have used epson printers but it doesn't matter which inkjet you use. I have sold many mouse
pads using inkjet.

There is no reason for inkjet ink not to stick to the surface of a mousepad. Main difference with shirts and mugs, is that they go through wash cycles and the ink would come right out on the first wash.

I have actually attached polyester and cotton samples to freezer paper and fed them through my big Epson. Results were great, but hand washing soon took the smile off my face.

Short answer: heat transfers can be used on any type of polyester although the "stick" is not as good as it is on cotton.

Heat transfers work fairly good on mouse pads because you can apply more pressure than what is advisable on say a polyester shirt.
