ABomb,
You have one Epson 1400 printer, correct? If this is correct, this is a 6-color printer. As far as I know, there is only one hybrid setup for the 1400 printer and it is a hybrid for only sublimation / film positives. Here is more information on it -
Hybrid, Dual Purpose Epson 1400, 1800, 4800, 4880, 7800, 7880, 9880, 9880 - MultiRIP. But this does not sound like it will work for what you want to do.
The majority of hybrids that have been sold are either the 48X0 or 78X0 versions. There are some R1800s hybrids as well. However, all of these printers are 8-color printers because it allows the user to have two sets of CMYK inks in the printer at the same time. The 1400 printer does not allow this because it only has 6-channels. Thus, you can only run 4-channels of CMYK and then 2-channels of Black ink for printing film positives. Here are the different options you have in my opinion:
1) Buy a second Epson 1400 printer and run two separate setups. Probably are going to want both of them as CIS systems since the cost per a print in cartridges is almost twice the amount.
- The negative to this setup is that you have to purchase 2 bulk feed systems, another 1400 printer, 6 bags/bottles of dye sub ink and 6 bags/bottles of heat transfer ink.
2) Buy an 8-color printer (i.e. R1800, 4800,...) and set it up as a hybrid with both sets of ink in the printer. You will need to determine which sublimation and heat transfer ink you want to use. This will tell you which software program you can use.
- The negative to this setup is that you have to purchase a new printer, get either the Sawgrass driver or RIP to control the use of only 1 inkset when printing at a time, 4 bags/bottles of dye sub ink and 4 bags/bottles of heat transfer ink.
Trying to switch out bulk feed systems is probably not going to be a viable answer. You will have to flush out the ink in the print head / dampers - which can add up over time. Then you are going to land up wasting ink trying to get the lines reprimed since you will keep unplugging them from the printer. Again, this is going to waste ink. The sublimation ink is not cheap and the combined cost of wasting both inks could outweigh the cost associated with one of the two options above.
If you really prefer to use a roll of paper to print on, then you might want to seriously look at the Epson 4800 or 4880 printers. These printers have the built-in roll feed. The R1800 can be done, but it is not as easy or reliable in my opinion. The negative with the 48X0 printer is that it cost $2000, but it also prints 17" wide and is a production printer (so it should last longer). Ink cost on the 48X0 and 78X0 printers are less than the 13" wide printers as well.
Hope this helps. Best wishes with your decision making process.
