I am having troubles getting the perfect navy blue and the perfect Columbia blue.

They both have purples hues to them. Some like them some don't.

Any tips???

The easiest way I've found is to print and press a color chart onto various substrates (t-shirt, mugs, unisub plastics, etc.) This will give both you and your customer a visual chart to pick the colors from and reference info to reproduce the color.

(Be sure to record all the color profile and printer settings on each printed sample color chart!)

You can download color charts here: Colour Charts, Palettes & profiles - All files are in vector format and can be scaled to any size

Make sure that you are not using PMS colors. Our Dye Sub Tips link might help you.

I use RGB colors.....but no matter what i tweak, the colors aren't that great.
Navy is either too black, or too purple.
Columbia, is either too blue or too purple.

My royal is dead on though.

just for reference, i'm matching colors on shirts side panels (like Vapor Phenoms or Colorado Timberline Tolucas).

The colors you are trying to reproduce might be out of gamut so depending on how the profile is built (perceptual or relative colometric) it will either try to fool you by giving you a color that when belnded in the image will give you a similar visual effect or the color that is closest to the original. Navy blues are typically very hard to reproduce and in this area most inks fall short. If you have a 6 color printer you can check to see if your ink supplier carries dark blue and orange and set up your printer with Hi-Fi printing (the equivalent of hexachrome). The dark blue is designed to expand the color gamut in the blue area and typically will allow you to hit the navy blues quite well as well as generate beautifull purples.
If 6 color printing is not posible and you are getting "purple" blues try reducing the Magenta levels and adding black a little bit at a time. You can also try printing a pantone color chart (a very large one) and visually pick the blue that is closest tot he one you are trying to achieve, then take the RGB values for that blue and print it as a spot color (replace the colro values in the graphic file witht he values from the pantone chart. If you need to do this kind of color matching on a regular basis get yourself a RIP software, Wasatch has a color Atlas feature that generates color books for visual matching... it's a great feature!
