Default R1800 Opinions

What does everyone think of this printer. In looking at bulk ink Chromablast systems, I see that Coastal has them for the C88 and R1800. Looks like for a bulk ink wide format Chromablast setup, the R1800 is it....Or are there other printers supported, just not by Coastal?

The R1800 can be bought on eBay very reasonably.

Ross

I have two R1800's and I think they are good printers. I use 1 for sublimation and 1 for film positives for screen printing. The only printers that Chromablast is designed for that I know of is the C88, R1800 and the 4800.

I see in this post you use the R1800 for sublimation , but have read that is not recommended to use the R1800 for sublimation inks ?

Does it work well ?

Mike

Where have you read this and why are they not recommending it.

I've been using my for a a year an a half and have sold a lot of shirts and other things.

There are not a lot of options in DyeSub printers right now. The R1800 is better than the C88 for a couple reasons.
1) the R1800 will print up to 13" wide and the C88 prints only 8.5" wide. 2) the R1800 is built much better in my opinion. you see tons of people having problems with their C88's. Just do a search in the website for C88 and I'll bet you'll get about 80% of the are people reporting problems with them.

Now if you want to spend some bigger bucks, then you can go with the 4000, which I hear is a good printer, but it's about 4 times more expensive than the R1800 ($2000 compared to $500). When I get ready to upgrade, I'll probably go with the 4000 with a Dual setup for DyeSub and Heat Transfer inks.

Hi Rusty,

I read that statement on the coastal business website

Detailed Description We do not recommend using Sublimation Ink in these systems. Please click here to view our Sublimation Bulk Ink Systems.

I have a R1800 and its brand new, I want to start usining sublimated inks in it. But I was concerned when I saw that satement on Coatal's website. ( see above)

Long story short, I bought a R1800 months ago and used chromablast ink in it. But I had a system failure and Epson sent me a new printer. So now I plan to switch over to sublimnation, I feel that the colors are more vibrant and there are many more options for use , such as shirts, plates etc.

I would like to get a bulk systen for this machine. What do you recommend ?

Thanks for you input

Mike

Some people in the industry feel that the R1800 is an ink hog and runs slower that it should when doing dye sublimation. One of the reasons is Sawgrass has a problem with the micro-weave process that the R1800 has. Fred from iProof either has helped them resolve it or is in the process of resolving this. I also know several other distributors that discourage the use of the R1800 for dye sub. This is not to say that there are plenty of people out there that are doing great with it.

As far as the bulk systems, it really all begins with what type of sublimation ink you are going with. The Sublijet IQ and ArTainium bulk ink bags use different connectors. So, you can't really switch from one ink to another. I prefer the systems that are enclosed in a black box because it hides the ink, looks better and makes the entire set-up easier to move around or take on the road. The rack trays with the ink on it side exposed do basically the same thing, but it just looks cheaper. The other difference that I just learned is that the SubliJet IQ bags have a no drip/leak connector on it. Where as the ArTainium bags have a screw on connector.

Considering this is the only DyeSub setup I've used, I can't compare it to ArTainium or other printer models. All I can say is that it works for me. There are some areas that could be improved, such as dropping less black ink and printing faster, but I've just learned to deal with it.

ArTainium has been reported to have better color, but not a true black. Sublijet black is true black, but doesn't have as good colors.
