Default Sublimating a Glass Floor Tile Mural

Have any of you ever sublimated the glass floor tiles that places like The Paper Ranch have displayed in their booths? These are the ones that you sublimate on the back of them so that the image shows through the glass. Those look really cool when done in a big mural. I have a box of ten 12"x12" tiles sitting on the floor just waiting to be sublimated, but I'm still trying to figure out what to put on them that will really be an attention grabber, and also build up enough confidence since each tile cost $12.25. I have 10 tiles and was going to do a 9 tile (3 x 3) mural. So that means I only have 1 tile to screw up . Now that I think of it, that's only 3 foot by 3 foot which isn't very big. I probably should go for something like a 5' x 5'. But the 10 tiles cost me over $120. So I'd need another 15 which would cost another $185 to make it a 5' x 5'. It better be pretty impressive if the tiles alone are going to cost $300.

I attached a sample pic of what I'm talking about if you haven't seen it.

The glass tiles are wonderful! We printed some that are used in a shopping mall store entrance and a couple of shower walls. They print very easily. You do not need a high resolution graphic for the glass as there is a bit of natural distortion anyway. The cost sounds staggering, but really isn't much more than ceramic.

Before you print something this size and this expensive you may want to make sure your picture will blow up to a 3' X 3' without pixelating so bad it looks terrible. I've done some small glass tiles but I'm limited to 8X14 print size. The floor they use for shows is impressive to say the least but they have a lot more money than I do so I stick to small but impressive mural work.

That's true, it will have to be a pretty hi-res image. But fortunately, since the glass causes some distortion anyway, it won't have to be that sharp behind the glass. It will be interesting to do some testing.

Rusty,

Why don't you buy some of the smaller 4" tiles to play with and test to get comfortable with.

I have used the smaller version of these tiles (4" & 6" square) and they are as easy or easier to do than regular ceramic tiles (at least I felt they were).

I have met the inventor of these tiles at trade shows, he actually uses these tiles himself to make huge murals including the one you showed. He is really good at it and is helpful if have questions. But like I said I would buy some smaller ones first to "play" with, it's a lot less expensive if you screw up a 4" tile.
