We did a test run for a upcoming job and the shirt color is a bright harley orange (Jerzees 100% cotton). We are getting a dark window after pretreat and final treatment of the shirt. We did lower the pressure on the press and also tried doing a wash on the shirt but the dark window is still there.
Looking to see what others have done for printing on an orange colored shirt? We have printed on a Gildan 100% cotton red and had the same window effect but it was not as visible and after the first wash it went away.
Re: Recommendations for printing on an ORANGE shirt
When pretreating, try first misting the shirt with distilled water before spraying your pretreatment. This helps to get rid of the pretreat square. Also Equipment zone sells a pretreatment that is for printing with white ink on light color shirts. You might want to try that also. I have not printed on orange shirts with white ink so I am not sure, but those are the first two things I would try.

My post from the DTG Forums
"Red dyes are very reactive, orange is a combo of red and yellow. Are you cutting the pre-treatment 50/50 with distilled water? You may need to try a different brand of orange shirt. You can also try washing the shirt prior to pre-treating and printing it - it could be that there is a sizing compound on the garment that is causing the discoloration.

Hope this helps!"
On this, when should 50/50 pretreatment be used instead of full strength. We have baby pink, grey, and black shirts that we'll print white ink on. Should I use 50/50 or full strength on these color shirts?

Sell Pre-washed shirts
If the only way to get a good print is to pre-wash the shirts, then the answer is yes. It is likely that the sizing compund in the garment is reacting with the pre-treatment and causing the stain. By washing you will remove most of this compound.
Re: Recommendations for printing on an ORANGE shirt
Is there any guidelines out there on when you should or when to pre-wash before you Pre-treat?
Can you buy garments without sizing compound?
I am all for getting a good print but never heard pre-wash in the past year I have been doing this. I posted a while back about pre-treat staining / shadowing and the replies I received were related to the heat press.
I guess if you work at home like me I can pre-wash if needed.... But if you are in a shop/store front you will need a washer / dryer or bring them home and add it to the cost.
Re: Recommendations for printing on an ORANGE shirt
The best thing to learn from this post is NOT to offer the entire catalog of shirts. dtg Printing works great on most, but not all shirts or colors. You have to do the testing before you offer to sell shirts. You will also start to notice that some brands have the shirts made in different factories when you go to the XXL and larger sizes. If this is the case, then you have to test the smaller size and the larger size independently because they could be using different looms and sizing chemicals. Check the tags to see if they are manufactured in the same country.

The pretreatment Bobbie is referring to is called FastBright. It is designed to be used when printing white ink on light colored garments only. The FastBright might work better if it is a lighter color orange that you're printing white ink on.

We have had some customers report back that the washability with this product is not the same as the regular white ink pre-treatment. Also, the pre-treatment all of us sell for our white ink was reformulated about 4 months ago to improve on this issue.
Re: Recommendations for printing on an ORANGE shirt
Fastbright is probably a good option. At least maybe try it out. Definitely wash if you're having issues.
