What printer are you runnning? and what Rip because printing the white layer is in the rip which usually tells the printer to Fire the particluar channels that have white ink in them. The printer does not know it has white ink nor does PS.

In your RIP program select color layer mask. This will lay down a white under layment. Then in photoshop change your white cmyk setting to 1%c, normaly white is set to all 0%. The rip program will then see your white color layer. I use this method all the time for printing white on black.

When using RIP Pro - create the image you want printed in white ink only in solid black, under ADVANCED in your prinitng preferences go to LAYER TYPE - select WHITE INK LAYER and make sure you set WHITE INK RESOLUTION at the level you want it.

Hope this helps!
