What Settings Do You Use in RipPro for Black Shirts?
Hi, I finally got my brand new HM1 fixed and am ready to start printing with white ink. When I go to print and put in the settings I do everything they told me in the training. But when I print it either prints nothing, prints solid black everywhere, or makes a thin outline of the logo. All I'm trying to print is a plain white text logo with a solid black background in photoshop. What settings am I supposed to use to have just the white logo print on the black shirt? I would just ask my distributor but I would like to start printing this weekend.

i have a t-jet but i think you need the white to have at least 6% color in the mix in order for it to print white (not just an underbase)- it will still print as white - without any tint - i hope it's the same for your machine - i'm sure others will correct me if i'm wrong.

Hi Ryan,
Ok I am going to try to explain this as well as I can, I too own a HM1 printer. On photoshop where you have your file open you need to replace the white in the image. If you go to image, then go to adjustments, click on replace color. Then click on the white in the image, just below selection you will see a little box of color. Click on that and change you white, I myself just put 3% yellow or magenta and replace with that as it still stays white but is enough color added to make the machine recognize that it has color.
Once you have changed your white go to your printer setting in adobe and click on advanced. These settings are really important that you have them right to get both layers printing correctly. The first setting you will need to make sure is set right is to make sure you have color and white layer selected and not just color layer. once you have that set, it should print the white and color layer, also make sure you have the right media set as black shirt. Sorry if I dont have the exact names for the settings correct as I am on a different comp., but you should be able to see where I am talking about if you look through the settings. once you have those two set you can also add a white hightlight, I use 15% setting on my Rippro. and I also use medium density for the my white layer so that it goes down nice and solid. If you still have problems you can email me your number since you are in so cal I will call you as that is also where I am at. It might be easier to walk you through it than trying to explain it by typing and I can also go on my other comp at the same time.

Thank you so much Bobbie! I got it working great. I would have never figured out how to add 3% color. I just have two more questions - do you do one or two passes of the white? I did one pass with 1440x720dpi, medium density, & 15% highlight and there is still a lot of black showing through.
Also I noticed when it does the color pass it doesn't seem to actually spray any ink, probably since its only 3% yellow, but it there a way to bypass this?

Well If you are getting black still showing through, maybe do two passes at of white. Where you are setting your layer type you can just change this to white layer and it will only print white layer, Right below there you will see how many copies for each color and white. as long as you change your setting to white layer only above it wont print the color layer, so where it says copy put 2 on white and just leave color where it is with one since it wont print the color anyways because you have the white layer only set in your layers. The 720 x 1440 only applies to the color, the white is set by the density, with doing two layers I would change the density to light and do two copies first, if you still are seeing through then go back to medium density.
Also when you are pretreating, after you spray on your pretreatment it helps if you use a paint brush and brush in only one direction with it, I usually will just brush down. That way it keeps the fibers of the shirt all going one direction and you will find your ink will get better coverage that way.
if you have any more questions feel free to ask, I hope this helps
Re: What Settings Do You Use in RipPro for Black Shirts?
If you have an image with a black background which is going on a black shirt and you DONT want it to print black, then you should using the setting "Color layer automask (black background)".
This setting will ignore any pure black in the image and print everything else.
You do not have to replace any pure white with 1% in the image when using this setting.

He said he was printing an all white logo with the black shirt as the backround. That is why I told him to use those settings as he is trying to get more white coverage, at least that is what I get from reading his posts.

To me it sounds like he has a black backround set in his image.
If this is the case, using the Color Layer automask with Black background is the easiest way to print, otherwise you are right, he'd have to change the pure what to something else.

Yep it does sound like he does have black in his image, I did not even pay attention to that. although after I gave him the settings last night he said it was printing the way he wanted other than not laying enough white. That is why I told him those settings but I think if the coverage is not that great it could be a pretreatment issue of the fibers not being brushed smooth.
Re: What Settings Do You Use in RipPro for Black Shirts?
Very true, fibers are always a problem. The HM1 lays down more ink than the standard Kiosk, and we need to do 2 passes of white at 1440 to get a good even coverage of pure when when printing on black.

My Hm1 does really good coverage with just one layer of white at medium density. Do you have the original Kiosk or the HM1?
