Default The Theory of DIY DTG?

Hello.

After do some readings and watch several videos on YouTube, it seems that dtg works just like normal printer.

The theory is just to convert the stock feeder from holding a paper to hold a tshirt instead.
And change the ink from use for paper ink to use for garment ink.

That two point is the major theory.

But there's several question in my mind.

What a good printer to start up with? Wide enough, no complex microchip, whatsoever so it will be easy to hardmod.

And regarding ink, what type of ink actually we use in dtg?

I also read there's a need to reprogram the motherboard/chip (I don't know)... Why?
Because the function is not affected, it's hardmod.

And my theory on how to make Print on Dark Garment DIY DTG is...
Fill the black catrige with white ink refil.
Of coz you need to flush the catrige and the printer beforehand.
Then the trick is done using our computer.
I bet we can use photoshop to easily using color picker and change the white into black and black into white and vice versa. I mean the image before we print it out.

Hence, when we print it...
The white(actuall image is black) color sygnal will leave empty dot(pixel) and because the tshirt is dark, it gives the right color to the image.

While the black(actual image is white) color sygnal will commands the black catrige on the printer to spout out the ink inside the catrige. Please remember, we have fill white refill ink in this catrige. Hence, it resulting white color.

Now, for all of that.
It's just a theory and not be done yet(By me).

OR

There's some more complex thing I should know?

You are correct if only printing on white shirts it will act just like a regular printer.

There are several suppliers of DTG ink, I'm sure some will chide in and make recommendations.

This is not necessary unless you are going to ask the printer to do something it was not designed to do... For example, feed backwards.

I've given that some thought. I don't like the idea of having to flush the cartridge every time I print one shirt. Not very time effective and a waste of ink. However your substitution may have some merit if you were to use more than one printer... One printer to print the white and another to print the color. This could avoid the need for a costly RIP.

You would have to give the substitution some thought. For one you would have to tone down the image so that you don't over-saturate the shirt. Secondly the white underbase needs to be slightly smaller than the image so that there will be no white showing...

Thanks for your thought mate.

Indeed, I was intend to make 2 separate printer for white and black.

Ah, I need to read more about the ink now.

Oh, ya...
I heard there's some head modification too...
Is this really necessary?

Where are you getting some of this stuff? No, you don't have to modify the heads... From what I've learned you do need two passes with the regular CMYK setup to get the richest color... No need for a black only run. The white run would be for a white undercoat only.

As far as inks try DTGInks

DTG Inks - DTGInks

Good Luck!
