Default pricing shirts-artwork separate or lumped in?

I hope this hasn't been covered before-I searched and didn't really find an answer. As a new DTG printer/designer (don't actually have the machine yet), I'm wondering is it better to price shirts with the art charges tacked onto the per shirt price, or is it better to give the customer a per shirt price and then a separate art charge? I am a designer and believe most, if not all, of my customers will NOT have any artwork, so will be needing that created. I have designed many T-shirts over the years, lots of times as favors for someone to take to their printer, so I know the time involved can vary greatly depending on what the customer needs/wants. But I also know that in my area, art/design work is not valued at all. So, if I hit someone with say a $200 art charge, they might freak out. So, I'm thinking in almost all cases it is better to factor in the art charges you think will cover your time and add that into the per shirt price. How do you do it? Thanks.

To Me its actually gonna depend on the the exact order.. We have done it both ways..
and its going to depend on how elaborate and time consuming the art work is..
If its a order for just a couple shirts or a few shirts for say work shirts etc.. we just charge by the shirt..
If its an order that is being purchased for a clothing line of theres.. and they are buying the art work also.. then of course we charge.. and example would be a customer of ours that resells shirts.. we did the art for Him plus gave him the disc with the art when we were done.. for 500.oo.. It was a very time consuming job and again for resell..

It kinda depends on how you are looking at their order.. If they are buying shirts.. or buying artwork.. . If that makes any sence..

That's what I was thinking-that it depends on the order/customer/quantity. Thanks for your reply.

I generally require the customer to provide the artwork. That way I save time nothaving to deal with it. I tell them the requirements for file types, sizes, etc. and let them take care of it.

If I have to design art for them then I have them pay by the hour or I'll make a flat rate fee if its simple text layout, or like a business card type print.

Just my two cents.
