Without looking at the shirt up close it hard to know, however "FOR THE RECORD", DTG can reproduce outstanding B&W images as well as it reproduces color (colour) output.

The original image and the RIP will play a major roll in how well it will turn out.
As you probably know printing B&W takes some understanding and tweaking to get the punch and correct tonal values even on paper.

There on some PS filters that can assist in optimizing B&W images.

I would go with screen printing. It's probably not black and white, but maybe a 5 color simulated black and white. That would make the transitions 10X smoother that just 2 ink colors.

An alternative way to do this is to print the photo using a heat transfer with a grey scale print on it and the brand name at the bottom as a plastisol transfer. Since the photo is a rectangle shape, it would be very easy to use an opaque transfer paper. Plus, the heat transfer paper will give you a nice white color to start from. Most of the time when doing a dtg print with that much white down, the white will not look uniform (i.e. some pitting may occur). You can help counter this by putting a white highlight over the top of it, but it still will not look as smooth as a heat transfer in my opinion. But a dtg print is the preferred way when you don't have a square / rectangle design.

Just another alternative way to think about.

Given that it's a Stussy shirt this particular example is likely to be screenprinted.

I agree that if it is that brand name the chances are it is screen printed.

it could also me the dark shirt transfer paper that DA is referring to.

impossible to confirm without touching the shirt in my opinion.

The shirt sells for $89!! This eliminates the cost of setup issue for screen printing - even if you are only printing a couple.

By the way, could I get a list of the folks who will spend $89 on a single t-shirt, I have some swamp land here in Florida I'd like to sell them!
