Default DTG vs' CMYK

i was thinking about this today, looking round the shops i was trying to see if i could spot stuff on the highstreet that was using DTG, my conclusion was that i couldn't. there was some stuff that looked very sharp and colorful but i just had to conclude it wasn't DTG it was just very well done CMYK.

where im going is what segment of the market will DTG really capture? anything on large scale production wont be viable and CMYK would be the better option, is the difference to joe public even noticeable? i just can't see how it [DTG] could be that viable for small runs when it has such high costs? what part of the market would provide the business? and any run's on a small batch i see the customer never really wanting something with more than 1,2 screens.

.. i really like the concept and ideas behind DTG but im not quite convinced yet.

andy.

I personally have not seen any dtg printed tees from major brands. I was shown a few tees from brands like Ecko,Obey and ZooYork that were thought to be DTG but on close inspection it was simulated process, Index or CMYK printing techniques.
It's more likely to see SimProcess or Index printing used by major brands more so then CMYK printing (CMYK has a high risk of color shifting on press during production runs).

I haven't used a DTG machine myself but i too am under the impression that DTG won't be used for volume production. In my opinion, DTG is ideal for small volume, non critical (pantone matching isn't important), high detail work.
