Hello ,

Is there someone from Montreal that as opened a shop in their homes ?

Did you get the occupation permit ?
Was it hard?
Have your taxes increased by much ?
How about inssurance ?

Trying to figure this out and make this as painless as possible for myself but i'd like to know from others who have lived it what i'm getting myself into.

I've known many printers that started in there garage but none ever planned to operate the business out of there, just start there and then move to a facility asap when business was going.

I'm not aware if there are permits for operating a printing press with dryer ect.. in a resident. Most people i know that started out small, started as a hobby, more like an art project, so they didn't have the belt dryer or flash units. I would think the dryer and flash units are the real issue with permits and insurance.

What area of MTL are you planning on setting this up? i can make some inquiries for you.

I can confirm that there a no permits for operating a manual press...there is however a residency permits you can acquire to have a commercial artists studio in your house if you will...as long as there no transformations to be done to the house or that you are not a nuisance to the neighbours these permits are ussualy emitted the same day.

It's a bit unnerving because the city is not very transparent when it comes to issuing permits

I have some premium square footage here and it would be a sin not use it and unwise to spend on a space that would be equivalent in size but triple in price .
