OK so we sell some of our designs on Cafe Press. One of the hot sellers was being bought 10 at a time, but then returned after being worn for their money back, and we are out that commission. What a sham. 30 days return policy. Just something to think about.
I've sometimes wondered about that too.
I'm not complaining because it can be a good thing on some products- like the clocks, they may quit running within the 30 days. But items like t-shirts or prints- you know within 5 minutes of receiving them if they are printed wrong, the wrong size or you just don't like the product.
It may be shipping issues- I don't know. But I have had t-shirts returned just ONE day before the 30 day was up. I'm sorry but I assume those shirts were worn.

I don't think it's a sham at all. It's there to help the buyers feel more comfortable in shopping with you/CafePress in the first place.
Of course you would be out the commission if the garments were returned for some reason. CafePress is also out the money for the sale as well.
If that return policy wasn't in place, you may be losing more legitimate sales as well.
People use the policy for the wrong reasons sometimes. I see your point, but I am saying they use it to their advantage and not what it is in place for.
the problem is there are always people using a good thing for doing something bad. For example the Internet is something good, but so many people out there using it for cheating, stealing and god knows what else.
The CP return policy is good as well. To blame are the people using it for the wrong reasons.
I've been on the good and bad end of this policy. I've bought things from my own shop that simply didn't work out for me due to size or in the case of the ceramic travel mug, the printing. They refunded my money immediately.
I also had a pretty hot shirt for St Paddy's Day in 2007. I sold a ton of them. Then about 8-10 of them came back AFTER the 17th. Different customers, different styles, etc... No way that all of them were suddenly defective.
