Default Making My Business Official and Legal

My fiancee' and I have been doing screen printing for about a year and a half now. We want to advertise and become official and legal to promote ourselves. We are located in Illinois and don't have an official place of business. We print and operate in a portion of a shop at my parent's residence. We would like to know what we must do to become legal. We went to our local county courthouse to ask them, and well they didn't have anything to say that helped us at all ironically. To start what's the difference between business license and doing business as and what do the cover? Also federal tax and state taxes, do I need both and why? What's the easiest way to attain these, where, and is there any loopholes? Also is there an issue of having this business at a residence? I don't know a lot of business terms sadly so simple answers are appreciated, haha . Links to articles as well would be appreciated to. Thanks in advance.
