Default trademarking name through state vs. nationalizing

Well my question is, I heard you can trademark your business name through the state and its cheaper then going through the national trademark route. what is the difference...I am assuming if you trademark through the state then your business can only be legally limited to you for that state only and someone else in another state can take the same name without it being illegal...is this correct? Just wondering if i'm getting the right information.

I'm yet to hear a good word said about state trademarks. They don't exist here in Australia, but when reading opinions about them in the US words like "worthless" and "pointless" tend to come up a lot

It depends on what you want to do. It seems like you are confusing having a registered business name with trademarking. Getting a registered trademark federally is something like $300 and you have to apply and wait a month or three, and see if it's accepted. People don't usually do that with a business name unless they are going to be promoting it nationally and want to really build that brand. If you just want to reserve the business name, then yes, you can just pay the state about $20 for a DBA. If you are just getting a DBA you can use your personal name for it, and don't even have to be incorporated.
