We do a lot of youth sports teams uniforms and parents shirts. I am having issues with a procedure on handling payment. Most of them pay when they pick up the uniforms. But some of them I have to track down to get payment. I've been kicking around a few ideas---paying up front when the order is placed; paying half when the order is placed and the other half when order is picked up. (by the way I work out of my home, but I have to get some kind of procedure when my retail shop opens in August).

Would like any feedback on how you handle youth teams?

I work out of my home also...when I get an order ...my policy is half down and the balance when order is dropped off or picked up....half down covers any shirt costs and my time if the customer decideds to cancel order...the half down is non-refundable..... hope this helps

Half when the order is placed and the rest when the job is complete. If they do not pay the remaining balance then don't give them the item which means you will not have to chase them down to get your money. Most times the half they paid upfront will probably cover the cost of the shirt plus printing.

Oh working out of your home is not a factor.

Ditto. I also work out of my garage. Don't feel bad about asking for a 50% deposit, just explain that you have been burned in the past and it's nothing personal.
