I don't know if it is exactly the same in the UK as the US. One of my coworkers used to work for a bank and said to limit how much you use your debit card. The reason for this is that if there is an unauthorized transaction on your debit card the money is gone. Gone from your bank account. It can take months and months for the bank to reverse the charge. He said that credit cards are much easier to reverse charges on.
In case of fraud I am not so sure if you can recover your
money if you use your debit card. It is safer to use your
credit card.
Couple of months ago I reserved a flight ticket in a travel
agency. When I went to pay the ticket with my credit card,
it was declined. I asked the agent to try again and again and again.
Nope. It didn't work. Next morning I called my credit
card company and they said they denied the payment
because they considered it was fraudulent transaction.
Once I confirmed I was trying to buy a ticket, they allowed
me to use it.

How about a one time use credit card, or one of those *shopping* credit cards where you load it up with a set amount for a particular purchase?
This way, your checking account number, debit card number are safe, money orders I don't prefer bc they can be taken, and then the money is just gone, no fraud to file, you are paying again, it happens like that sometimes. There's just more ways to be frauded than there are to pay safely it seems these days.
I am digging those credit cards that are made specifically for shopping, and then dispose of.

That's true, I just remember that one of my credit cards, with Citi, offers virtual credit card numbers, or something like that, and it's free.

Yep, you're right, that's another way. If you already have a card, some credit card companies will issue a temporary number, or something like that, right Marcelo?
It's a temp number they issue for you to shop with, and the charges go on your regular statement, but no one you shopped with got your *real* number. Great point about that, Marcelo!

For what I've read they provided you with a temporary
number that is linked to your account, and it is valid for
one transaction/purchase.
So yes, the vendor never gets your real credit card
number.
It is very cool, tho I never used it yet.
