do i need a specific set up to be able to take credit cards and such, when selling online?

what is the general cost for such a system?

is it as easy as 'paypal'ing, or should i consider those secure-pay type things that incorporate themselves in your page?

If you have a paypal account, then you can set up a cart like zencart, and receive payments that way.
It is easy and fairly secure.

It really depends on the method of haw you are going to accept payments. As Marcelo suggested you may want to start out with PayPal, however as you grow the cost may be more expensive and the service may limit your ability to grow. When this happens you will most likely want to set up a traditional merchant account and use a gateway and shopping cart system. OS Commerce provide a free shopping cart system. The most inexpensive gateway I can think of is ePRocessing Network, which can proivide an integrated gateway and shopping cart for $15 a month.
