This section of the forum is for discussing the business and finance issues of the t-shirt industry. Which business structure to use (sole proprietor, LLC, S Corp, etc), how to handle billing, where to register your business and get the proper licensing, etc.
i've been talking to the yellow pages people about getting some ad space, but more and more i read that its a waste of money. does anybody think its a good idea.
i was going to take out a couple of business cards ads, and a smaller 1 inch colum ad (signs, screen printing, embroidery). they are also putting everything online. they are coming in at about 320 a month. does that sound fair, or is there room to haggle. i havent signed or really agreed to anything yet. just trying to get thoughts and opnions, maybe suggestions on other forms of advertising.
so far i have been growing by word of mouth, and friends and family customers. i have also done flyer distribution, and mailed brochures to new business, although i got my biggest client that way, thats about all i got, i stopped the mail thing. i also go out and to local business' when im slow
im making enough money to get a shop space and i really need the room, but i will now have a higher overhead so i was hoping the yellow pages would help, but most people tell me its not the way to go. i live in area that has three cities next to each other, i would say about 500,000 people or so, give or take 100,000

i dont think the yellow pages would be worth the money IMO. the internet is the resource used by most people. if you have a website, you should definitely see about using google to get people to your site.

I think it is a good idea if you live in a highly populated area which it sounds like you do. I personally don't use the yellow pages because the area I live in is few locals and many tourists, and the tourists aren't usually there on business.
Personally, I wouldn't do it. Yellow page advertising is a thing of the past. If you want to be listed in the business section, you should be listed automatically by name, address and phone. Mine includes email. I'm not sure what your business name is, but if it's something like Amp clothing, A's are obviously at the top of the list. More people have called me because my business was listed first in line. They have a tendency to go down the line to get quotes. If they strike a good conversation with someone, oftentimes, they don't go any further.

We've ran a couple yellow pages ads with nothing coming out of them. The last one was a couple business card sized ads and line listings in 5 categories, for a year, and we had not one response.
Internet SEO optimization, online ads, google adwords are the way to go these days...

Search Engine Optimization. It's something google helps out with, or you could also do reading and research about it. I know there are threads up here about it. It helps you pick and define keywords that will help you out in organic searches (such as, "screen printing, boston, mass" or "foil printed shirts").
