allright... i believe that before i put any design on any attire it should be copywritten right?? that way it will stop people from taking my designss...true?
but what about patents?.. if i want to start a patent for a company do you guys know the cost??..and even if its just the rights of my company name and logo will i have to pay taxes on my "company" every year??
i need help because i want to make sure noone steals my name or logo...or designs..

Yes once you copywrite your designs you have some form of protection. What the copywrite does is give you the right, that if someone does still it, you will have recourse to take them to court and defend it as its owner. It wont persay stop someone from stealing it, but it does give you the right to protect that ownership. There will always be people who will try to steal designs, and its important so you can protect your right as the owner.

As far as patent, I think you are talking about trademarking here. This is what you would do with your compan y name and logo. When you trademark your company name and logo, this protects you so others cannot use the same name and logo as you. Also if you want to trademark your name and logo, make sure to do a search to make sure no one else is already using it. On the left hand side of this page is a link to the trademark page where you can search. Hope this helps

thank you for the site..but is kind of confusing...
there is a company with the name i want.. but it says abandoned..does that mean i can use mine?

Nothing can stop people from taking your designs.

Copyright and trademarks just give you legal recourse to sue them to try to get them to stop and to try to get damages if they do take your designs.

Patents generally don't apply to t-shirt designs or company names.

You will probably have to pay income taxes on the money you make, but that is something totally separate from copyrights, patents, or trademarks.

You'll need to check with your local chamber of commerce or accountant on that. You may have to pay sales taxes back on the sales tax you collect for sales made within your state.

In general you trademark a brand/company name and you copyright designs. Please use the search box at the top of the page to search for trademarks or copyrights. You'll find dozens of threads that outline the process and costs.

It's possible. It's also possible that the name is in use by someone else. Sometimes two companies can use the same name but for different industries.

If you do google searches and trademark searches, it should help you figure out if the business name you want to use is in use.
