This section of the forum is for discussing the business and finance issues of the t-shirt industry. Which business structure to use (sole proprietor, LLC, S Corp, etc), how to handle billing, where to register your business and get the proper licensing, etc.
Hi everyone I am very new to all this and I need some professional help with the following-
Is it legal for me to print a drawing-picture but not photograph of say a famous football player and then add a saying above the art work.
The phrase is not offensive and does not name the player.
Is this legal or do I need to get permission?
Can anyone help
Thank you guys
Ifunk1, this is a very good question. I would like to draw a picture of a political candidate or imprint their picture. I do not want to face lawsuits either. In terms of copyright, copyrights are for phrases or sayings, right and trademarks are for company logos? Where does intellectual property come into play if you use a drawing or the actual picture of a public figure?

Permission is the better way to go.
Think of it this way, how would you feel if someone drew a picture of you, added a saying above it (offensive or not) put it on a shirt and sold it without permission to use your likeness and you weren't getting any of the revenue from the sale of the item with your likeness on it?
Thanks lizziemaxine. Is there one place which you can contact that has the licensing permissions? I would like to know this as soon as possible. Thanks again for your help.

I don't know of a central place to contact for licensing permission. It's probably on a person-by-person/company-by-company basis requiring a lot of phone calls, letters, etc.
To me it would be easier to create a unique image that belongs to you than the time it probably would take to get permission to use someone's likeness.
