The tm is the symbol you can use before you get your official trademark registration, the R is for after you recieve it and is the official. You can only use the R after you have officially registered your name and it is accepted as a legal trademark. But the tm will help until you recieve your trademark but it doesnt really prove ownership the way the R does.
