This section of the forum is for discussing the business and finance issues of the t-shirt industry. Which business structure to use (sole proprietor, LLC, S Corp, etc), how to handle billing, where to register your business and get the proper licensing, etc.
OK well I know how to print and I have decided to bite the bullet.
Just picked up a Lawson press, flash, and conveyor etc....
Now I am looking to get my designs out there. I am looking to start a clothing company. (yes I will be printing about 70% of my jobs, but I am not going into business to print shirts i.e. not looking to print other customers stuff) Looking to sell via website and thru events that I attend.
Well now that I have the equipment and I know how to print. What steps are next? (yes I know thats a wide open general ?) I have read a ton of posts and I haven't found anything solid yet.
My ? is where do I start.
Do I need a business Lic. first?
Do I need to get just and EIN to get shirts at wholesale?
Do I need to get a lawyer?
Do I need to get an accountant to handle all the taxes?
Do I need to TM the name of my clothing company?
I am looking to just do a sole prop. to start with as I am going to start small. (like 6 designs at first) Basically working out of my garage. (Eventually I will probably have stuff made overseas (jeans, hats, all-over prints, socks, etc...)
Is there anyone in NC that has any insight for any of this? Any info would be amazing.
Thanks in advance for anybodies comments.. .

You can buy t-shirts without an EIN, but many wholesalers may ask you for a resale certificate or some type of proof that you are a business and not a consumer.

If you need legal help, sure But you can start a business without a lawyer.

It's not required, but it can help.

It's not required, but it can help you protect your brand name.
Start small. Grow slow and smart. You need your business liscense and a tax id number.
If you get bogged down in bills and expenses, you wont be able to grow, and it will be extremely hard to stay in business.
You dont need an accountant- you aren't making any money.
You dont need a lawyer, you don't have vast amounts of material in the public market, and...
you aren't making any money.
I have a friend who looks like he may go under- probably won't though- too much overhead.
Just my humble opinion speaking from experience in NC.
Im a newbie at this whole T-shirt business and I was just wondering if you had a clue how this person cut these images out? They look so perfect! See pics below. Any suggestions. Thanks so much for your time. <3
No I did not attend. I wish I knew when it was as I would have went. I guess they come every year? I will have to go to the next one for sure.
Any idea when it rolls into town?
Holy cow...
Talk about timing....
Thanks for the heads up. I will be swinging by there tomorrow to peep some suppliers.
Thanks for the info.
One other ? I googled the show and I can't seem to find out what time everything kicks off. I checked like 10 sites and all they do is list the dates...
I guess I will just swing by there tomorrow around 9 ish..
Thanks again for the info...
Man I love forums.
Machine head-Bite the bullet lol.File ur paperwork first.Check ur state website and the info might be there. You need an EIN to open bank accounts and i believe to buy wholesale from suppliers.U can get it for free at the IRS website after u file ur LLC.Sole prop..whichever..dont pay for an EIN!..U dont need a lawyer u can be ur own registered agent and do all the paper.Trademarking is a future thing to do.Any design u have in ur page are allready intellectual rights.and Once u open a merchant account with ur bank get them to file ur taxes..its not too hard dont stress and good luck
