Default Anyone with Advice for Oldie/Newbie?

Hello all,

As this is my first post(frequent reader), I will give you a little background. My brother owns an embroidery business which I have worked for in the past. He also does some screen printing for the locals and has it contracted out. I have a full time job in the agricultural industry and have started thinking of some creative sayings for tee's related to my industry. I have tested family and friends and some not so friendly people with this idea.

I am looking at starting my own tee business. I would have access to a local screen printer. That isn't my problem. I haven't gotten many answers from my brother, so that is why I am here.

Should I start off as a sole propreitorship or a DBA? My credit isn't the greatest due to some overspending in college, but even with COD, can I still start an account with some t-shirt distributors? I have ordered from many when I worked for my bro, but haven't gotten a straight answer from him as what I should do. He said I could go through him, but he wants to profit from this too. Should I just grin and bear it and have him help, or should I try on my own?

I have a unique place to display and try to sell some shirts coming up in December and was wondering if I should test the waters before I make a go of it.

These shirts will be primarily sold online as I am very familiar with E-commerce running a site for my employer.

Sorry for all the questions and thanks for the read,

Danny

Start off with a sole proprietorship ...

Yes, most will make you C.O.D. anyway...

Just try getting your shirts done with a printer that does contract printing... you can get an account with delta or something now, and have the shirts drop shipped to the screen printer. I also suggest Big Cartel » Bringing the Art to the Cart for a cart.

goodluck-

Hi, Danny - Working with family members can be a challenge. Only you know if you and your brother can work together successfully - the answer to that you can't find on a forum.

I think you should approach him one more time with a detailed plan for the business. At that point, ask him for a yes or no. If it's 'yes,' make sure you put everything in writing (just as if he wasn't your bro), and if it's 'no,' you gave him a chance to join you, so there can't be any complaints later when the money starts to come in.

Either way, good luck! (and farmthreads sounds like a good name for your company)
