I just want to start with what a GREAT website this is!! I've been doing alot of research online and this website has got it all!!
I was hoping someone out there might be able to help me with setting up your own label. I've got so many ideas on paper but just don't know where to begin!!
I have seen a Short Course held in Sydney "How To Start Your Own T Shirt Label" but as I am in Melbourne it is a little hard to attend (It is ran on a Saturday once a Term, and the only two Saturday's this year i haven't been able to attend have just happened to be the same dates they have held it). The next one won't be until late this year!! Something like this would be perfect!!
Has anyone seen or heard a similar course out there?? I don't mind travelling interstate as long as its a weekend. Your feedback would be much appreciated...
It's a difficult subject to cover in a short course - not so much because it's complex (it isn't really), but because it's difficult to find the information balance point. You don't want to spend 3 hours a month going over the blatantly obvious, but you can't really get into much depth in that time either. I'd have concerns over the quality of the course, but if you've received referrals or testimonies then great.
If you don't have a background in art or design then a short course isn't going to cut it. If you do, then I think the main thing to focus on is the business fundamentals.
With that in mind, a short business course should be about as useful as a short t-shirt course. Something like the cert III in Small Business Management for example (this is the course you do if you're doing NEIS), which is run at most TAFEs.
The important thing to focus on isn't the fun flashy stuff (which is what people are trying to bring to mind when they say "Start your own t-shirt label!"), but the "How not to go bankrupt" stuff.

Thanks Lewis, I agree with your comments. In my own case I have plenty of business experience but lack knowledge of the local industry and to some extent production methods and processes. I imagine it would be hard to embody this specific information in a short course, so I'm expecting to have to learn by experience!

Most people I meet are self taught to some degree. 1 day every so often isn't much use. But if you want to part with $300 or so you could enroll with the GJS familiarization course, run every so often in Sydney. Personally I think it's an insult to most people to charge that much and not get the opportunity to receive a rebate off your first purchase with them. Afterall the whole thing is designed to promote their own business!

I did a 1 night a week for 6 weeks course. I learned the basics to starting to screen print but the most part of it is things I will never use again like paper screens and using wax on screens. It was helpfull and led me to where I am today but honestly I would have rather spent the money on supplies, bought a book and BANG practised at home. I also taught myself artowrk, using a carousel, multi colour and a few other tricks. But the course helped meet a few people who have contributed to my store. D

The course i mentioned earlier is held at the Sydney Community College. They have also just advertised a mid-week (Tuesday nite) short course.
At the moment I've been reading text books and magazines to gather a basic insight of how the industry works. Not to mention the endless hours on the Internet!!
Can anyone suggest computer programs which they use to help them with desiging (Photoshop) etc. Looking at purchasing a new laptop soon and would like to know some of the programs others out there use.

Hey there, wondering the same thing, would illustrator be the best program for doing your own designs?
Depends on how complex your designs are and as such do you need 1,2,3,4 colour process?
hi there im a newbie and just going through the forum whats the 1,2,3,4 colour process? imagine it has to do with the multiple colours in designs or something? thanks in advance
