We're actually signing the artists to an exclusive contract and then paying them commission on each item sold that bears their design.

Ruben, Look at this from their perspective. Artwork can take time to produce and a good may have developed his talents over many years to be able to produce commecial ready artwork in a timely and efficient way. What I'm saying is the artist can charge what they need and you (as a customer) may or may not pay that price based on your desire. You can join an art service and get artwork for 5 to 50, or you can contract with an artist and have them do you a piece for 400 or whatever. The economics of the job at hand would dictate what is the best deal. Some artists can make their money by selling that $400 artwork to 40 people for a fraction and let them customize it. If you have them do all the work, they can set the price.
